If you have taken a yoga class in the Fitness Center, then you probably already know our fantastic yoga instructor Dotty Molt. What you might not know is that she is also a skilled photographer! Below are Dotty’s best tips on taking the perfect shot, as well as a few of her favorite places to shoot:
“So, the sun is about to set, there are pink clouds all over the sky, the light is dancing everywhere, heck, when you turn to tell your other half that you are going to drive as fast as you can to your favorite location to shoot the sunset, even their face is pink!
The race is on! But where are you headed? Brilliant colors bouncing off clouds are pretty, but if you’re shooting over rooftops, it’s unlikely that you’ll want to hang that image over your fireplace. Your best bet is a wide-open landscape that allows you to take advantage of different perspectives, perhaps reflections of the sky in a lake, or a view from up in the mountains with nearby Mt. Rose framed by the sunset.
Here’s a few tips on how to create a plan so that you can capture that beautiful image:
- Scout out locations: When you are hiking or driving, make notes of possible sunset locations.
- Look for water: On calm days, set up your shot at the edge of a body of water for reflections that fill the frame with color.
- Keep an eye on the sky two hours before sunset noting where the clouds are, then check your weather app to see which way they are headed
- Follow the clouds wherever they take you, matching where they are headed in relation to your preselected locations.
- Be at your location at least 15 minutes before sunset, keep an eye on those clouds, look around to see if there is something blowing up behind you, and don’t leave right after sunset; sometimes the sky will continue to light up as the sun settles on the horizon.
- Be persistent, and consistent in your pursuit of beautiful light.
My favorite locations are:
- Washoe Valley on any part of Washoe Lake
- Pyramid Lake
- Chimney Beach and the Visitor’s Overlook on Lake Tahoe
And if you waited a little too long to make a run for it, here are some great spots around the Montrêux area:
- The pond on Lake Geneva
- The 18th hole
- The 7th hole
- Washoe Lake from the end of Pinewild Road in St. James”
Dotty Molt has been teaching yoga at Montrêux and photographing Lake Tahoe and the Mt. Rose Wilderness since she moved here in 2006 from Boca Raton, Florida. In 2020 she photographed over thirty families, shot 22 magazine covers, and experienced a year of unexpected miracles and silver linings thanks to the kindness of the Montrêux Community.
