Every August, the Montrêux Fly Fishing Group extends a warm welcome to the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern Nevada to join them for an evening of fishing at the pond on the 18th golf hole.
“We have been working with the BBBS for two years now, offering the opportunity for 10 ‘Bigs’ and their ‘Littles’ to come for an afternoon of fly fishing, instruction in partnership with Orvis, and most importantly, fun!” – Carole Klove, Fly-Fishing Group Member
As the kids arrive, they are greeted with snacks, hats, and stylish sunglasses for the event, as well as rods and lines that are donated from Orvis, an outdoor sporting goods store. While the event is still relatively new, it’s become quite the hit with the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization.
“As this is still a new event, before we had secured the date, BBBS announced it on their calendar of events. The event was full even without knowing the exact date. Their director said this event was a highlight of the summer!” – Carole Klove, Fly-Fishing Group Member
Once our Fly-Fishing Group has went over the do’s and don’ts of flying fishing, it’s time to fish. Usually for the first few tries our fly-fishing group handles the fishing rod, but soon enough the Littles and their Bigs all giving it a go!
“Many of these children have never been exposed to fishing and this is a fun opportunity for them to learn a new skill, possibly catch and release a beautiful rainbow trout, laugh, enjoy time outside with their Big, and make new friends!” – Carole Klove, Fly-Fishing Group Member

After a few tries and some lines getting stuck, someone usually gets a bite! With the help and expertise of the Fly-Fishing Group, the fish has been caught and is ready for its photo op. The kids are always excited to see the fish up-close. After they get a photo, the trout is released back into the lake.

After an hour or two of fishing, the kids wind down with some chips and sandwiches donated from the Clubhouse. While the event is still new, it has become a heart-warming event that we all look forward too!
“As several of the "littles" were leaving this year, they said "we hope to be back next year!" I think this will be many of the ongoing community events supported by Montreux and its members.” – Carole Klove, Fly-Fishing Group Member
